The Idea came from my laborious attempts to lure people into
health clubs to experience Wallyball. However, at the rate I was
going, I figured I'd be 70 years old before the sport ever realized
it's full potential. So I did the next best thing; Instead of
bringing people into the health clubs, I would take the health club
to the people!
Build a portable sports court that could be set up in high
traffic venues and introduce racquetball, wallyball and squash to
the masses. Why not? Wouldn't a 7 ton, forty-foot long by
twenty-foot high by twenty-foot wide acrylic box attract attention
in a shopping mall? How about a consumer sports show, or maybe even
the Embarcadero in the heart of downtown San Francisco?
I'm not going to bore you with all the details on how the court
was built but through a lot of wheeling, dealing and slight of hand,
this entrepreneur built the world's first portable acrylic sports
court. I loosely use the term portable because it took six men four
days to assemble the court and two and a half days to dismantle it.
Nonetheless, the court was a reality and at the time, a true
marketing achievement.
